Steve Trout

2017 WSHF inductee

Accomplished as a baseball, football and basketball player and as a multi-sport official, 1969 Riverdale graduate Steve Trout has been involved in athletics his entire life.

Trout was a 12-time high school letter winner, eight-time college letter winner and continued in sports after that in softball and officiating.

At Riverdale, Trout was quarterback of the 1968 undefeated Falcons football team that is in the Wyandot Sports Hall of Fame and earned first-team honors on the All-Ohio, Northwest District and North Central Conference teams. He was a first-team AII-NCC pick in baseball and a second-team AII-NCC honoree in basketball as a senior.

From there, Trout went on to play both baseball and football at Findlay College, lettering all four years in both. He set the school record and tied the national record with five field goals in a 15-13 victory against Defiance in 1971, earning him national "back of the week" honors. He also set the school record in 1969 with a 53-yard field goal against Wilmington. In baseball, he was an NAIA District 22 All-Star in 1971.

He later played for 13 years with the Moulton Merchants and Piqua Fastballers fastpitch softball teams, managing the Merchants form 1979-84. He played in the 1984 ISC World Fastpitch Softball tournament with Piqua and three times played in national tournaments.

Trout has been an OHSAA volleyball and basketball official for 41 years, working 16 boys and one girls state basketball games and 20 state tournament volleyball matches. He has served as an OHSAA volleyball rules interpreter for 25 years and as an OHSAA softball umpire for 17 years, taking part in five state tournaments. In addition, he has officiated NCAA Division III men's basketball Final Four tournaments.

Among his biggest games, Trout officiated the only game LeBron James lost in his eight state tournament appearances and worked a five-overtime district final game between Continental and Pandora-Gilboa.

Trout is a member of the University of Findlay, Hancock County Sports, Ohio Basketball and Ohio High School Officials hall of fames.

He and his wife, Charlene, have been married since 1976 and reside in Wapakoneta.
