Tom Yingling

2024 WSHF inductee

A 1971 graduate of Carey High School, Tom Yingling excelled as both a multi-sport athlete and then later as a coach.

As a football player for the Blue Devils, Yingling was a three-year letter winner, two-time All-North Central Conference and All-Northwest District linebacker and earned All-Ohio third-team honors at linebacker as a senior. In his first season as a starter as a sophomore, he ranked in the top five all-time at Carey for single-season tackles. He went on to become Carey’s career tackles leader with 439, a record he still holds. He twice was the team most valuable defensive player and earned the leadership award as a senior.

Yingling also earned three letters in baseball and two in basketball.

After graduating from Carey, Yingling became a four-year letter winner from 1971-74 at Ohio Wesleyan University, where he was a two-time all-conference defensive back and one-time captain. He was a special teams player as a freshman and played in the Alonzo Stagg Bowl. He graduated in 1975.

Yingling was an assistant coach for one year at OWU and two years at Carey and then followed his high school coach Tom Geschwind to Massillon Jackson and was a long-time physical education teacher (1978-2012) and coach there. He served 20 years as head baseball coach, winning four Federal League championships and one district title while also finishing as district runner-up six times. He also served 20 years as an assistant coach, including during the 2017 state champion season. He still lives only a few minutes from coach Geschwind in Massillon.

Yingling served as an assistant football coach for 20 years and is a member of the Stark County Amateur Baseball Hall of Fame.
